This cite has been excavated since 1989 and pottery shards and a few buildings have been found. In the 17th century english pirates used Ambergris Caye as a hiding spot and base when they attacked Spanish ships. In the 18th century refugees started to flee to Ambergris Caye for safety. these refugees started to fish and grow coconuts.
Modern Ambergris Caye has many bars and tourist shops, discos, hotels, resorts and dive shops. Recently a airport was just put on the island. By October 2014 Belize had already hosted over a million tourists. To put that into perspective Belize's population is only 340,000. That's almost three time the amount of tourists than the population. Tourism is a big part of Belize's economy and that is why Ambergris Caye is so important. |
